The Vontobel Foundation is supporting the new Jewish Museum of Switzerland over two years, from 2024 to 2025, to professionalize and expand its educational programs promoting diversity, tolerance, and historical awareness.
The Jewish Museum of Switzerland was opened in 1966 as the first Jewish museum in the German-speaking world after World War II and remains the only Jewish museum in Switzerland. Its collection includes religious and historical objects, from the emancipation of the Jews in 1866, through the period of National Socialism, to contemporary Jewish life. The museum has established itself as a center for the promotion of Jewish culture and history. Around one hundred groups visit the museum each year, half of whom are young people.
The education of these young people is a core concern of the museum. It aims to expand its educational offerings and professionalize them at a new location. Educational staff are to be hired to provide regular programs for the public.
"Our educational program for children and young people aims to showcase diversity and tolerance as the hallmarks of a democratic society."
Dr. Barbara Häne, Jewish Museum of Switzerland
"Historical awareness is crucial for understanding the present, so that in the future we do not repeat the mistakes of the past."
