The Vontobel Foundation has had a longstanding cooperative relationship with the Nature and Animal Park in Goldau. In 2024, the Foundation supported the park with a contribution for the redesign of its red deer enclosure.
The scientifically managed Nature and Animal Park in Goldau makes an important contribution to species and nature conservation, education, and research. Since 1925, the park has showcased a variety of Swiss wildlife and other European species, conveying knowledge about animals, their environment, and the threats posed by humans. The park holds and breeds several endangered species in internationally coordinated breeding programs and, when possible, releases them back into the wild. Selected research projects are conducted to gain scientific insights into the behavior, needs, and diets of animals.
In 2023, the park adapted its 50-year-old red deer enclosure to the latest findings in modern, species-appropriate wild animal care. This upgrade significantly improved the welfare of the deer as well as the safety of the caretakers.
Previously sealed grounds were replaced with natural forest soil, and species-appropriate vegetation was planted. Modern feeding systems now encourage the animals to forage for food. A special glass façade provides a unique view of the red deer enclosure and its naturally designed habitat. Signs, exhibits, and models near the enclosure invite visitors to explore.
The park conducts important educational work on the winter behavior and return of the red deer, as well as on the issue of habitat reduction. Schools use the park as an extracurricular learning site or participate in guided tours aligned with the school system’s “Curriculum 21.”
"We have created a species-appropriate facility where it’s possible to experience the native red deer in its natural environment."
Dr. Pascal Marty, Curator of Nature and Animal Park Goldau
"The Nature and Animal Park Goldau combines species conservation with its educational mission in an exemplary manner, all within the framework of Curriculum 21."
