Educational trail raising awareness of environmental issues and biodiversity

Restoring moors that have been drained of their water makes an important contribution to nature conservation by creating valuable habitats for rare animal and plant species. The revitalized Auasagna/Las Palüds moor near Bos-cha is being showcased as a model of what can be done, evident to anyone who will hike along its planned educational trail which will highlight the themes of moorlands and biodiversity.

Intact moors have a high capacity for sequestering carbon: for example, they store 30 percent of the world’s soil carbon, even though they account for only three percent of the earth’s land surface. Restoring these wetlands is therefore an important tool – and one of the key nature-based solutions – for combating global warming. Biodiversity also benefits from the preservation of these vital habitats for rare animal and plant species.

Since its founding in 2009, the Pro Terra Engiadina Foundation has aimed to conserve and promote the many dimensions of the Lower Engadine’s diverse natural and cultural landscape. As part of its biodiversity and climate protection projects, the region’s Auasagna/Las Palüds moor near Bos-cha was restored through rewetting. By creating valuable habitats for rare animal and plant species, this restoration benefits not only the climate and water balance but also biodiversity.

The revitalization of the Auasagna/Las Palüds moor near Bos-cha is being showcased as a model, with its planned trail encompassing a number of informational stations on topics such as moorlands and biodiversity. The goal is to inform families, children and young people, as well as adults and school classes about the restoration of this fen, and to sensitize them to conservation and environmental issues.

The Vontobel Foundation is funding the educational trail, which will include interactive and web-based elements and is scheduled to open in 2026.
